How to Become a Moring Person + How I Wake Up At 5:30 Everyday

February 18, 2018

I have an 8am class every day of the week this semester and I love it. People look at me like I have two heads when I say that and think I'm crazy for being as upbeat that early in the morning. I have to credit all of that to being a morning person.
I absolutely wasn't always a morning person. Towards the end of middle school and the start of high school I would sleep in on the weekends until 1 or 2pm which is so crazy to me now. Sleeping in that late is just wasting so much of your day!

Much of what makes it easier to get up in the morning starts the night before.

Night Time

It's important to start winding down about an hour before bed. That means turning off any overhead lights and switching on your lamps, turning the volume down on the TV and slowly turning off electronics. The blue light from your laptop and phone keeps your brain awake.

Plan ahead
Setting out your outfit the night before saves you a lot of time in the morning. It makes it more likely that you'll love your outfit the next day instead of something your quickly threw together, which can give you a little extra pep in your step.
Making your breakfast, or at least doing any prep work the night will make you much more likely to actually eat it since you'll have time.
The same goes for lunch if you bring your own. Make it the night before so you aren't running out of the house and it's probably healthier than something you threw together last minute.

Prep for the best night's sleep
I read a study that said going to bed at 10 and waking up at 6 are the key times for a "perfect" night of sleep. Personally I'm usually in bed by 9:30, but if I do go to bed later, I make sure it's never later than 10 or else I know I'll be miserable the next morning. Trust me you won't miss anything going to bed early on a week night.
It's also important to sleep in a room that's a little on the cooler side. 66 is the temperature that our bodies like to be at when we sleep, so turn the thermostat down, open a window or turn on a fan (added bonus: white noise) to keep your room nice and cool. Remember cool, not cold.
Some times we just have so much on our minds that it's all still racing through our minds when we try to go to sleep. Keep some post-it's or a journal near your bed to jot down anything important that pops into your head while you're trying to sleep. You'll sleep better knowing you can clear it from your mind but it won't be forgotten.

Eat Breakfast
Breakfast is so, so important because it gives your body the fuel it needs to function. If you're not always hungry in the morning, eat a piece of fruit or a yogurt and grab something to-go and eat it a little later in the day.

Get moving
Being active in the morning can give you an extra boost of energy for your day. Anything for some quick yoga, a 15 minute walk or a full on workout will help you see the benefits.

Kick the caffeine
This one might be hard, but if you can slowly wean yourself off of drinking caffeine daily, it will make it much easier for you to get up an start functioning earlier.  If you really need your fix, limit yourself to one cup or try drinking tea, which has it's own plethora of health benefits.
